RAPID-FLEX
Fast Setting Water Resistant Ceramic Tile Adhesive
Uses
RAPID-FLEX is a rapid setting, grey, cement based floor
and wall tile adhesive, which can be grouted 1.5 hours
(at 20oC) after laying. It is specially formulated to have
enhanced properties of adhesion and flexibility making it
ideal for fixing fully vitrified tiles, low porosity tiles as well
as glass and porcelain mosaics without incorporating an
admixture.
It is suitable for fixing all types of ceramic tiles in internal
applications. This product is suitable for use with
underfloor and undertile heating providing the system is
switched off for 48 hours before and 7 days after the
installation. The mixed mortar has a slump free
consistency with high initial grab enabling heavy wall
tiles to be fixed without the need of battens and spacers.
RAPID-FLEX will bond with most construction materials,
including concrete, cement, sand/cement compounds,
brick and blockwork, plasterboard and existing ceramic
tiled surfaces.
Preparation
The substrate must be clean, structurally sound and free
from dust, oil, grease and any other contamination that
may prevent adhesion. It should also be strong enough
to support the weight of the tiles being fixed. RAPID-FLEX
can be applied to dry or moist surfaces but moisture
sensitive materials must be dry and remain dry after
fixing.
Concrete: allow at least 6 weeks drying time before
laying tiles onto new concrete. Mechanically clean the
surface and ensure all mould oil and curing agents are
removed.
Cement/Sand render / screed: wood float finish and
prevent rapid drying of the surface for 3 days (renders)
or 7 days (screeds). Allow render to air dry for at least 2
weeks prior to tiling and 3 weeks for screeds.
Brick & blockwork: allow 6 weeks drying time prior to
fixing.
Existing tiles: ensure the tiles are well adhered and can
support the new tile bed. Thoroughly clean and rinse off
the tiles prior to fixing. Use of a primer will be necessary
when tiling over glazed tiles.
Mixing
RAPID-FLEX should be added to clean water to the ratio
of 1 part water to 3 parts powder. Continually mix the
powder with a mechanical stirrer to form a soft, slumpfree,
easily workable mortar. Pot life of mixed material is
approximately 30 minutes @ 20oC. The material should
be applied at temperatures above 5oC.
Application
The mixed adhesive mortar should be applied to the
substrate using a notched trowel 8mm notches (floor
tiles), 5mm notches (for wall tiles) or 3mm notches (for
mosaics). This will produce a series of parallel ribs of
adhesive into which the tiles should be firmly bedded,
with a twist and slide action to ensure full contact. On
deep studded tiles or for fixing in wet locations, it will be
necessary to ‘butter' the back of the tile to achieve a
solid bed. Open time of the exposed mortar bed is
approx. 10 minutes, dependant on conditions. Do not
trowel out an area of adhesive greater than can be tiled
over within a 20 minute period.
Final set will occur between 3-5 hours. Clean off surplus
adhesive with a damp cloth before adhesive sets. Do not
use at temperatures below 5oC or in conditions of
extreme heat.
Grouting
Grouting of wall tiles may commence as soon as the tile
bed has set and hardened which should be
approximately 1 hour @ 20oC. Similarly floor tiles can be
grouted once the RAPID-FLEX has hardened sufficiently
to support light foot traffic, typically 3 hours @ 20oC after
laying depending on the porosity of the tile and the
backing.
Coverage
This will vary according to the condition of the substrate,
method of application and back profile of tile. However
as a guide a 20Kg bag will yield approximately 16L of
mortar, equivalent to @ 5.6m2 solid 3mm bed of
adhesive.
